The Hon. Carol A. Bassett was appointed by Governor John Vereker to the Senate in 2003 as an Independent Senator. In 2008 following the retirement of former Senate President Alfred Oughton, she was elected to be first female President of the Senate.
Senator Bassett was born and raised in Pembroke Parish and educated at the Central School (now known as Victor Scott Primary), Prospect Secondary School for Girls, Bermuda Technical Institute and the Cranleigh Secretarial School where she concentrated on business studies. Sen. Bassett spent the majority of her career in the insurance industry where she retired in 2004 after 27 years of service, rising to the level of a senior executive. During her time in the insurance industry she gained many professional designations, including the Master Fellow of the Life Management Association, (FLMI/M).
Senator Bassett is a dedicated Christian who is an active member of the faith community, and has worked extensively with the youth of Bermuda in various capacities over the years, including The Bermuda Track and Field Association, Swan’s Running Club, AME Church Homework Club, Mt. Zion YPD Dept., to name a few.
Senator Bassett is the wife of Roderick Bassett and together they have three sons and three grandchildren.
